She was there when I was born.
Gave me life and breath,
On that rainy morn.
I am flesh of her flesh and bone of her bone.
She cradled me and rocked me,
And called me her own.
She’s the one who taught me to talk.
And with her hand,
I learned to walk.
She’s always been right at my side.
She’s echoed my laughter,
She held me when I cried.
She’s stayed beside me through the years.
She taught me of courage,
How to face my fears.
She taught me peace, how to be serene.
She taught me of beauty,
Oh, the things I have seen.
Without complaint she continued to give.
Sacrificing of herself,
For all I need to live.
And now you tell me my Mother is dying.
I know it is true,
I can hear her crying.
Black poison of greed infects her veins.
Upon her bosom,
She wears the stains.
Ungrateful children to whom she gave birth,
For the lust of more money,
Are killing Mother Earth.
This is dedicated to our precious gulf coast and all areas of our planet poisoned by oil spills in the name of greed. To the plants, animals, sea-life, humans, businesses, and ways of life that have been destroyed. It is also dedicated to all our grandchildren who will never be able to enjoy the pristine beauty of those places. They will hate us for the legacy we leave. I pray for their survival. It is only the wise who remember that we did not inherit this land from our forefathers, we are borrowing it from our grandchildren. My prayer is that we will wake up and put a stop to all this senseless destruction before it is too late, before our planet can no longer sustain life. If this touches you in any way, I ask you to pray with me that we can find a way to heal the damage we have done. Thank you.
